What is cloud backup? How it differs from sync and archiving

Having a copy does not mean you can recover. Enterprise backup depends on separate failure domains, retention policies and verified restores.

Why sync is not backup

Synchronization keeps working files current across devices. Accidental deletions or encrypted files can propagate to other locations. Version history helps, but its retention and deletion permissions still need review. Backup preserves recovery points under separate policies, while archiving focuses on long-term retention. These are three different needs, not interchangeable products.

Start with business requirements

Capacity alone is not enough. Daily change rate, acceptable data loss, restoration time and retention obligations must be considered together. An accounting database and a static document repository may need different schedules. Application consistency matters for databases, while version history matters for documents. Initial full backups and later incremental copies also consume bandwidth and must be included in the design.

Encryption and immutability address different risks

Encryption reduces unauthorized reading; it does not by itself prevent deletion by an authorized account. Immutability restricts modification or deletion for a defined period. Separating backup administration from production accounts and limiting permissions are important. Key management, retention periods and restoration privileges need to be assessed together.

Measure successful restores, not just jobs

A green backup job only tells you the job completed. Restore a sample file, virtual machine or database into a separate environment to check integrity and usability. Record the chosen recovery point, elapsed time, failures and corrective actions. F2Cloud Backup considers policy design and scheduled restore testing together.

Pre-decision checklist

  • List workloads and their owners.
  • Define retention and recovery targets separately.
  • Include restore-test scope in your proposal.
